Promoting Vietnam-Mozambique cooperation

At the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of the Republic of Mozambique Carlos Agostinho Rosario paid an official visit to Vietnam from 31 July to 3 August.

During the visit, Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario held talks with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc; paid a courtesy visit to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong; and visited the Vietnam National Committee on Incident, Disaster Response and Search and Rescue and the Viettel Group Headquarters. The Mozambique high-level delegation worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Mozambican Prime Minister laid wreath at the Monument to War Heroes and Martyrs and paid a floral tribute to President Ho Chi Minh in his Mausoleum.

In an atmosphere of friendship and cordiality, the two sides expressed their satisfaction at the Mozambique-Vietnamese good friendship, including deep bilateral cooperation on a number of fields. The Mozambique side expressed their admiration for Vietnam's glorious history of struggle for national liberation and praised Vietnam's achievements in building and developing the country. Viet Nam congratulated Mozambique on its socio-economic development achievements as well as reform efforts in recent years, especially efforts to overcome difficulties in 2015-2016.

Regarding political relations, the two sides agreed to maintain the tradition of exchanging delegations at all levels, coordinate and support each other in international fora; strive to contribute to the maintenance of peace and cooperation in the region and the world on the principle of respect for international law, resolution of all disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law. On this occasion, Vietnam asked Mozambique to support Vietnam's candidature for the non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council (2020-2021 term) and Vietnam's candidature as Director General of UNESCO (2017-2021 term).

On trade-investment and development cooperation, the two sides noted the good results of the Movitel Telecoms Investment Joint Venture between Viettel Group and Mozambique's SPI Investment Company and the Joint Research Project to develop starch food and food crops of Vietnam in Mozambique. The Mozambican side wanted the telecom group Viettel to expand its operation in their country and called on Vietnamese businesses to engage in such fields as trade, oil and gas, maritime transportation, farm and seafood processing to achieve the trade and investment targets set by the leaders of the two countries. The two sides pledged to make Mozambique a leading partner of Vietnam in South Sahara and Vietnam a bridge for Mozambique to reach Southeast Asia.

Also during the visit, Vietnam agreed to increase to exchange development experiences in Mozambique's areas of need such as natural disaster prevention, weather forecast, climate change response, education and training, exchange of experts and security-defense. Vietnam urged Mozambique to soon facilitate Vietnamese businesses to open customs bonded warehouses, develop distribution channels, and improve the legal framework for foreign investors.

The two sides witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Protection and Conservation of Wild Fauna and Flora and the initialing of the Agreement on Aviation Transport Services between the Governments of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Republic of Mozambique.

The official visit to Vietnam by Mozambique Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario was considered as a milestone in relations between the two countries since the visit of Vietnamnese former President Truong Tan Sang to Mozambique in March 2016. The visit contributed to strengthening the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Mozambique, thereby furthering the political, trade and investment cooperation as well as cooperation in other aspects of mutual interest in the coming time.
