Vietnam has always given priority to strengthening relations with Cambodia

At the invitation of Cambodian King Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, a high-level delegation of Vietnam led by General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong Vietnam paid a State visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia on 25-26 February 2019.

During his visit to Cambodia, Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong held talks with Cambodian King Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, visited Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk; met with Samdech Vibol Sena Pheakdei Say Chhum, President of the Senate; Samdech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, Chairman of the National Assembly; Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People's Party, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In an atmosphere of traditional solidarity and friendship, the leaders of the two countries informed each other of the situation of each country, exchanged extensive bilateral cooperation issues and shared opinions on international and regional issues of mutual concern.

The two sides expressed elation at the development of the friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Cambodia in the past time, contributing to ensuring peace, stability and bringing practical benefits to people of the two countries.

The two sides hailed the verdict of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on16 November 2016.

The two sides agreed that the protection, preservation and development of good neighborhood, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability on the basis of the principles stated in the Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Statement are the common responsibility of the two countries and peoples for sustainable development and bright future of both countries, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in region and the world.

The two sides agreed to strengthen and deepen political relations; improve the effectiveness of cooperation mechanisms between the two countries; expand cooperation and mutual assistance between ministries, departments, branches, mass organizations and people at the central and local levels of the two countries; continue to coordinate in organizing events and celebrations to enhance the significance importance of relations between the two countries; promote communication, and education on the traditional solidarity and friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia among people of all strata, especially the young generation of the two countries; continue to cooperate in refurbish the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Monuments in each country according to the agreed plan.

The two sides stressed the importance of and agreed to strengthen defense and security cooperation in the principle of not allowing any political or military force to use one country's territory to harm the other’s security, and resolve problems by peaceful means; strengthen coordination to maintain political stability, security, social order and safety in both countries; strengthen cooperation in natural disaster risk prevention, organize joint exercise in search and rescue; prevent transnational crimes; continue to exert efforts to coordinate in the search, and repatriation of remains of Vietnamese volunteers who sacrificed in Cambodia.

The Vietnamese side thanked the Cambodian side for their support and fair treatment of the Vietnamese people in Cambodia.

The two sides affirmed their commitment to respect and fully implement the Border Demarcation Treaties and related border treaties and agreements that were approved and signed between the two countries; appreciated efforts of the Joint Commission to complete 84% of land border demarcation and marker planting.

The two sides agreed to regularly share information, coordinate closely, effectively, and support each other in regional and international issues, especially within the framework of ASEAN, UN, the Greater Mekong Sub-region mechanisms, contributing to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

The two sides continued to emphasize the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security and maritime and air safety in the East Sea; agreed to settle disputes in the East Sea by peaceful means, restraint, not to use or threaten to use force, in accordance with widely recognized principles of international law including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); pledged to together with stakeholders fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and work for early conclusion of the practical and effective Code of Conduct of the Parties in the East Sea (COC), contributing to maintaining peace, security, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

The two sides highly appreciated the results and historical significance of the visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia of Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong, which contributed to further strengthening mutual trust and good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive, practical and effective cooperation, long-term and sustainability between Vietnam and Cambodia for the benefits of the people of each country, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

At the end of the talks, Party General Secretary, State President Nguyen Phu Trong and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen witnessed the signing of 5 cooperation documents.
